Diponegoro University, more popularly abbreviated as UNDIP, was established in 1956 as a private university and has become a state university since 1961.
The name of Diponegoro University was taken hero of the Central Java Prince who has heroism spirit against the Dutch colonization in the early eighteen century inspired the development of UNDIP since establishment.
UNDIP is located in Semarang - the capital city of Central Java. The university comprises 5 campuses which is located in the municipality of Semarang and the District of Jepara, about 70 km Northeast of Semarang.
Pleburan campus, the oldest campus after so many campus were unified at the beginning of establishment of UNDIP. It occupies ± 7 Ha, where all Faculties of Social Sciences, Post Graduate Program and some operative units are localized . Gunung Brintik campus is the site of Faculty of Medicine next to the site of Dr. Kariadi Hospital. Tembalang campus the newest and largest campus of ± 213 Ha, where the central administration and
all Faculties of Science and Technology. Teluk Awur campus which live in Jepara, 70 Km north eastern of Semarang is the site of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science and large campus of 60 Ha.
Currently, UNDIP is supported by reliable human reso
urces. In September 1998, UNDIP has a total of 1750 academic staff and 1065 administrative staff. At the end of September 1998, the total number of student is 24.424. The ratio between academic staff and student is good enough, that is 1 : 14.
If the part time lecturers are included the ratio will be even more ideal. UNDIP offers quite a number of study programs.Within the 10 faculties, there are 21 departments and 68 study programs which are relevant to the demands of the community.

Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) is a university with along tradition. While tradition remains important, the university also recognizes the importance of being progressive and innovative. UNDIP has principally four campuses i.e. Pleburan campus (old/city campus), Gunung Brintik campus (medical faculty campus), Tembalang campus (new campus) and Teluk Awur campus (marine science campus).
In the year 2018 UNDIP is expected to be :
- leading and pioneering university for the development of science, technology and arts.
- university which produces graduates with decent character and high quality of science and technology
- university which develops an academic culture, with the belief in God Almighty, to improve values and prestige of human beings.
